In October of 2018 TraC received $8300 from Vancouver Coastal Health’s One-Time-Only Health Promotion Grant to create a “bike library” for students from the Sunshine Coast Alternative School’s NDVR program. TraC used these funds to:
- Acquire a set of 10 bikes and helmets, a bike rack and basic tools
- Provide training in bike safety and basic maintenance at both the Gibsons and Sechelt campuses
- Empower teachers and students to manage the care and maintenance of the equipment to ensure use and engagement for 5+ years.
In addition, SD46 agreed to underwrite the cost of 2 bikes and helmets for the teachers.
We all know that riding a bike is a healthy, fun activity that also just happens to be the most efficient mode of transportation ever invented. But for some Sunshine Coast youth, access to two wheels is not easy. The Endeavour to Ride Program empowered these youth to improve their health and well-being and create life-long cyclists.
Thank you to the generosity and guidance of Elphi Cycles in Roberts Creek, teachers Tom, David and Scott, and LifeCycles for a successful program!
